A <a href="http://icrrhistorical.org/icmap.html" rel="nofollow">1971 IC map</a> has it going as far west as Sioux Falls, which has greater elevation than the highest point in Illinois. I lived in Champaign, highest point of the IC line, from 1969 to 1981; and crossed the tracks every school day -- besides riding the "City of New Orleans" a few times to or from Chicago. I had forgotten (if I was ever aware) that IC retired that cute mortar-and-pestle logo. Ah memories!
